What happens in Part Three, Chapter 5.
Winston is taken to Room 101. O'Brien tells him that the room contains the worst thing in the world, and for Winston that thing is rats. A cage of starving rats is strapped to a frame that will press against Winston's face and force the rats to eat through it. Winston breaks completely. He screams that they should do it to Julia instead. That is the real betrayal, not a confession under pain but a genuine wish to redirect suffering onto the person he loved. After that, there is nothing left of the old Winston.

O'Brien explains that Room 101 holds whatever a person fears most, and he has known since their early conversations that Winston's deepest fear is rats. The cage is ready. The terror is immediate and total.
Winston Begs Them to Use Julia Instead
When the cage is about to be pressed to his face, Winston does not just confess or plead for mercy. He actively wishes the torture onto Julia. He means it. That is what the Party needed: not compliance but genuine betrayal from the inside.
