What happens in Part Three, Chapter 3.
Alex leaves the hospital and tries to return to his old life, but things feel off. He visits the record shop and finds it has changed. He runs into some of his old droogs and discovers that Dim and Billyboy are now police officers, which shocks him. They take him out to the countryside and beat him badly, payback for old grievances. Alex is left alone and injured in the dark.
The beats worth remembering.
The record shop feels wrong
Alex goes back to a place that used to give him pleasure and finds it unfamiliar and cold. The world he knew has moved on without him.
Dim and Billyboy as police
Alex runs into two of his former enemies and is stunned to find them wearing uniforms. The State has absorbed the very people who used to represent street chaos.
The beating in the countryside
Dim and Billyboy drive Alex out of town and beat him as revenge for past violence. Alex, no longer protected by the Ludovico conditioning or by any gang, is completely vulnerable.
The moments you can actually use later.
Former enemies in uniform
Seeing Dim and Billyboy as police officers makes Alex realize that the boundary between criminal and authority was always thin. The State picks its enforcers from the same pool.
Alex beaten and abandoned
Left hurt in a field with no gang and no protection, Alex is at his lowest point since prison. His isolation here sets up the next encounter.
What to carry forward.
The State recruits violence rather than eliminating it
Dim and Billyboy becoming cops shows that the government channels brutality into official roles. The violence doesn't go away; it gets a uniform.
Alex's past catches up with him
The beating is direct payback for things Alex did in Part One. Students writing about consequence and karma in the novel should use this scene.
