The recap, key beats, and evidence for The Disaster Within, without reopening the whole book.

What happens in The Disaster Within.
The inner conflict comes to a head. Lucy breaks off the engagement with Cecil after realizing she cannot live inside his idea of her. Cecil takes it with surprising grace and a sharp insight: he tells her she is acting as though she loves someone else. Lucy denies it, and keeps lying to herself. A student should care because this is the point where the engagement ends but Lucy's self-knowledge is still incomplete. Uncertain on some details, since the exact sequence of scenes is not fully confirmed.
The beats worth remembering.
The break with Cecil
Lucy ends the engagement and tells him she cannot go on with it.
Cecil's response
He admits he treated her like a piece of art and sees that something else is behind her decision.
Lucy denies the cause
She insists there is no one else, even though George is clearly on her mind.
The moments you can actually use later.

She rejects the idea of another man, showing she is still lying to herself and to him.
What to carry forward.
Ending the engagement is not enough
Lucy frees herself from Cecil but has not yet faced the real reason.
Cecil gains dignity
He is more self-aware here than earlier, which makes him a fuller character.
