What happens in Part V, Chapter 1.

Luzhin, humiliated after Dunya broke off the engagement, plots his revenge. He has been staying near Sonya and decides to use her to strike back at Raskolnikov. He plants money on Sonya and then publicly accuses her of theft at the Marmeladov family's funeral dinner. The chapter sets up a trap designed to destroy Sonya's reputation and, by extension, discredit Raskolnikov in front of his family.

The beats worth remembering.

  • Luzhin Plants the Money

Before the funeral gathering, Luzhin secretly slips a banknote into Sonya's pocket without her knowledge, setting the stage for a false accusation.

  • The Public Accusation

At the dinner, Luzhin accuses Sonya of stealing from him in front of the assembled mourners, including Raskolnikov's mother and sister. The scene is designed to be maximally humiliating.

  • Lebezyatnikov Intervenes

Luzhin's own roommate, who witnessed the setup, steps forward and exposes the scheme. The accusation collapses, and Luzhin is disgraced instead of Sonya.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • The Planted Banknote

Luzhin's method, slipping money into Sonya's pocket before accusing her, shows calculated cruelty. It also shows how he weaponizes social respectability against someone who has none.

  • Lebezyatnikov's Testimony

Lebezyatnikov, a minor character who holds progressive views Luzhin mocks, turns out to be the one who saves Sonya. The irony is pointed: Luzhin is undone by someone he considered beneath him.

What to carry forward.

  • Luzhin's Revenge Backfires Completely

His plan to ruin Sonya and embarrass Raskolnikov fails because he didn't account for a witness. His humiliation here effectively ends his role in the novel.

  • Sonya's Innocence Is Publicly Confirmed

The false accusation and its exposure reinforce Sonya's moral standing. Students should note how the novel keeps protecting her reputation even as it tests her.
