What happens in Chapter VIII - Mina Murray's Journal.

Mina continues her journal as the aftermath of the storm settles over Whitby. She attends the funeral of the Demeter's captain. Mr. Swales, the old sailor from the churchyard, is found dead with a look of terror on his face. Lucy begins sleepwalking, and Mina twice finds her at the cliff churchyard at night, once in the company of a dark figure bending over her. Mina gets Lucy home both times and notices two small marks on Lucy's throat, which she assumes came from a pin. A letter finally arrives from Jonathan, but it is strange and brief, saying only that he is recovering from an illness in a Budapest hospital.

The beats worth remembering.

  • Lucy's First Sleepwalking Episode

Mina finds Lucy missing from their room at night and tracks her to the churchyard on the cliff, where she appears to be in a trance. This is the first sign that something is happening to Lucy.

  • The Dark Figure at the Churchyard

On a second night, Mina sees Lucy at the churchyard with a dark shape bending over her. This is Dracula feeding on Lucy for the first time, though Mina does not understand what she saw.

  • Jonathan's Letter from Budapest

Mina finally hears from Jonathan, but his letter is short and odd. He says he has been ill and asks her to come to him. The relief is undercut by how little he explains.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • Mina Covers Lucy's Shoulders with a Shawl

When Mina finds Lucy in the churchyard, she wraps her in a shawl and pins it at the throat, accidentally scratching Lucy's neck. Mina later wonders if the pin caused the marks she notices, showing how close she is to the truth without reaching it.

  • Mr. Swales Found Dead

The old sailor who scoffed at superstition and ghost stories is found dead with a look of pure terror on his face. His death right after Dracula's arrival suggests the vampire is already active in Whitby.

What to carry forward.

  • Lucy's Infection Begins Here

The two small marks on Lucy's throat are Dracula's bite. Everything that happens to Lucy in the following chapters traces back to these nights in Whitby. Mina's failure to recognize the marks is not her fault, but it delays any response.

  • Mina Is the Responsible One

Mina repeatedly gets up at night, finds Lucy, and brings her home safely. Her competence and care here contrast with the helplessness the men will later show. She is doing the real work before anyone else knows there is a problem.
