Emma: Chapter 23

by Jane Austen

The recap, key beats, and evidence for Chapter 23, without reopening the whole book.

Section recap · 2 min read

What happens in Chapter 23.

Frank Churchill spends more time in Highbury and joins a social gathering. He and Emma grow more comfortable together, and there is open flirtation between them. Frank also makes a point of going to see Jane Fairfax, which Emma interprets as mere politeness. The chapter builds the false impression that Frank is interested in Emma, which is exactly what Frank intends. This is the chapter where the deception really gets going.

The beats worth remembering.

  • Frank and Emma Flirt Openly

At a social event, Frank pays Emma considerable attention. Their banter is easy and enjoyable, and observers might reasonably think a romance is developing.

  • Frank Visits Jane Fairfax

Frank makes a visit to the Bates household to see Jane. Emma thinks nothing of it. The reader who knows the secret understands this visit is the point of his whole trip.

  • Emma Begins to Pull Back

Even as she enjoys Frank's company, Emma starts to wonder whether she is actually in love with him or just flattered. She decides she is not seriously attached, which she finds reassuring.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • Emma's Self-Assessment

Emma thinks through her feelings for Frank and concludes that she likes him but is not in love. She is pleased by this conclusion, seeing it as proof of her own good sense.

  • Frank's Visit to the Bateses

Frank goes to see Jane Fairfax at the Bates home, and the visit is noted but not questioned by Emma, who attributes it to ordinary social obligation.

What to carry forward.

  • Frank Is Running a Deception

His attention to Emma is partly a screen to hide his real attachment to Jane. Every scene where he flatters Emma is also a scene where he is misleading her and everyone else.

  • Emma's Self-Awareness Has Limits

She correctly identifies that she is not deeply in love with Frank, but she still does not see that she is being used as cover. Getting one thing right does not mean she sees the full picture.
