Ender's Game: Salamander
The recap, key beats, and evidence for Salamander, without reopening the whole book.
Section recap · 2 min read
What happens in Salamander.
Ender gets transferred to Salamander Army before he's finished launch training, which means he arrives as the least experienced soldier in the group. Commander Bonzo Madrid hates having him and orders Ender not to shoot during battles. Petra Arkanian breaks ranks and secretly trains Ender anyway. Ender starts learning by watching and by practicing on the side. By the end of the chapter he's already better than most of Salamander's soldiers, but Bonzo's pride makes the situation dangerous.
The beats worth remembering.
Bonzo Bans Ender from Shooting
Bonzo is furious that a launchie was dumped on his army and tells Ender to stay frozen during battles and not embarrass the team. This is a direct attempt to make Ender useless, and it backfires because Ender learns by watching instead.
Petra Trains Ender in Secret
Petra is one of Salamander's best soldiers and she defies Bonzo by working with Ender during free time. She teaches him the basics of movement and shooting in the battle room. This is the first real alliance Ender builds at Battle School.
Ender Fires Against Orders
In a battle, Ender breaks Bonzo's rule and shoots an enemy soldier to save a teammate. The move works, but it humiliates Bonzo publicly. The tension between them sharpens into something that will follow Ender for years.
The moments you can actually use later.
Bonzo's Order and Its Consequences
Bonzo tells Ender explicitly to do nothing in battle. Ender follows the order for a while, then breaks it when the situation demands it. This scene works well for discussing the conflict between obedience and judgment.
Petra's Secret Sessions
Petra and Ender meet during free time so she can teach him what he missed in launch training. The sessions are brief but effective. This is good evidence for arguments about mentorship and the informal networks that actually educate Ender.
What to carry forward.
Bad Leadership Creates Its Own Problems
Bonzo's ego prevents him from using Ender effectively. His decision to bench Ender is about pride, not strategy. Students should track Bonzo as an example of how bad command decisions damage the people underneath them.
Allies Come from Unexpected Places
Petra helps Ender not because she's told to but because she recognizes talent and resents wasted potential. Her choice to train him is one of the few genuinely voluntary acts of kindness Ender receives at Battle School.
