The recap, key beats, and evidence for Act 1, without reopening the whole book.

What happens in Act 1.
The Duke of Vienna secretly hands power to Angelo, a man known for strict moral standards, then slips away in disguise as a friar. Angelo immediately enforces old laws against sexual immorality, and Claudio is arrested and sentenced to death for getting his fiancée Juliet pregnant before their official marriage. Claudio's friend Lucio goes to find Claudio's sister Isabella, a novice nun, to beg Angelo for mercy on Claudio's behalf. The act sets up the central problem: a rigid new ruler, a man about to die for a law that was barely enforced before, and a woman who must now choose between her principles and her brother's life.
The beats worth remembering.
The Duke Disappears and Angelo Takes Over
The Duke tells Angelo and Escalus he is leaving Vienna and puts Angelo in charge. The Duke's real plan is to watch what happens from the shadows, dressed as a friar. This matters because everything that follows depends on Angelo having unchecked authority.
Claudio Is Arrested
Angelo revives an old law against fornication and uses it immediately to arrest Claudio, who has gotten Juliet pregnant. Claudio sees the arrest as political theater, a way for Angelo to prove he means business. Students should note this: the law is real, but the timing is deliberate.
Lucio Asks Isabella to Plead for Claudio
Lucio finds Isabella at the convent just as she is about to take her vows. He tells her Claudio will die unless she can persuade Angelo to show mercy. Isabella agrees to try. This is the moment the play's main tension locks into place.
The moments you can actually use later.
The Duke's Secret Plan
The Duke admits to Friar Thomas that he wants to observe how Angelo governs without being seen. He says he has been too lenient for too long and hopes Angelo will restore order, but he does not fully trust what Angelo will do with the power.
Claudio's Explanation of His Arrest
Claudio tells Lucio that he and Juliet considered themselves married in all but formal ceremony, and that Angelo is using his case to make an example of someone. This framing invites students to question whether the punishment fits the situation.
What to carry forward.
Angelo's Power Is the Problem
The Duke chose Angelo precisely because he is strict. That choice creates every crisis in the play. When writing about authority or hypocrisy, start here.
Isabella Is Caught Between Two Identities
She is about to become a nun, committed to chastity and withdrawal from the world, and now she is being pulled back into it to save her brother. That tension drives her choices in every act that follows.
