Measure for Measure: Act 3

by William Shakespeare

The recap, key beats, and evidence for Act 3, without reopening the whole book.

What happens in Act 3.

The Duke, still disguised as a friar, visits Claudio in prison and tries to prepare him for death. Isabella tells Claudio about Angelo's offer. Claudio, terrified, asks her to accept it. Isabella is furious. The Duke overhears and steps in with a plan: substitute Mariana, a woman Angelo was once engaged to and then abandoned, in Isabella's place. Angelo will think he is sleeping with Isabella but will actually be with Mariana. Meanwhile, Lucio keeps making reckless comments about the Duke to the Duke's face, not knowing who he is talking to. The act moves the plot from crisis to scheme.

The beats worth remembering.

  • Claudio Begs Isabella to Save Him

When Isabella tells Claudio what Angelo wants, Claudio's courage collapses. He asks her to consider whether her chastity is really worth his life. Isabella's anger at this is intense. The scene is one of the most uncomfortable in the play.

  • The Duke Proposes the Bed-Trick

The Duke tells Isabella about Mariana, who still loves Angelo despite being abandoned by him. The plan is for Mariana to take Isabella's place in the dark. This solves the immediate problem but raises its own questions about consent and deception.

  • Lucio Slanders the Duke Without Knowing It

Lucio tells the disguised Duke that the real Duke is a drunk and a womanizer. The Duke has to listen without reacting. This is comic, but it also shows how little rulers actually know about what people say behind their backs.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • Isabella's Reaction to Claudio's Request

Isabella responds to her brother's plea with sharp anger, saying that his fear reveals a cowardly nature. Her reaction is extreme enough that readers often question whether she is right to be so harsh, which is exactly the kind of debate the play invites.

  • The Duke's Knowledge of Mariana's History

The Duke explains that Angelo broke off his engagement to Mariana after her dowry was lost at sea, using her supposed bad reputation as cover. This background makes Angelo's hypocrisy concrete and gives Mariana a legitimate grievance.

What to carry forward.

  • The Bed-Trick Is a Solution That Creates New Problems

It gets Claudio off the hook and technically gives Angelo what he asked for, but it involves deceiving Angelo into sex with someone he did not consent to be with. Students writing about justice or morality need to account for this.

  • Claudio's Fear Makes Him Human

His request is selfish, but it is also understandable. He is about to be executed. The play does not make him a villain for asking. That ambiguity is the point.
