What happens in The Dwarf Tells of Prince Caspian.

Trumpkin tells the children the full backstory of Prince Caspian. Caspian is the rightful heir to the Narnian throne, but his uncle Miraz has been ruling as lord protector and has now had a son of his own, making Caspian a threat. Caspian's tutor, Doctor Cornelius, secretly taught him the true history of Narnia and the old stories of Aslan and the Pevensies. When Caspian's life was endangered, Cornelius helped him escape into the woods, where he eventually found the Old Narnians living in hiding. This chapter is essentially an extended flashback and it is the most important piece of context in the book.

The beats worth remembering.

  • Doctor Cornelius reveals the truth to Caspian

Caspian's tutor secretly educates him about real Narnian history, including the existence of talking animals and the old kings and queens. This education is what makes Caspian sympathetic to the Old Narnians rather than hostile like his uncle.

  • Miraz's son is born

The birth of Miraz's own child removes whatever protection Caspian had as the heir. Suddenly Caspian is not useful to Miraz anymore, he is a danger. This is what forces Caspian to flee.

  • Caspian escapes into the forest

Cornelius wakes Caspian in the night and sends him away with a gift: Queen Susan's horn, which Cornelius had kept hidden. Caspian rides into the dark woods alone, which is where his adventure with the Old Narnians begins.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • The secret midnight lessons

Cornelius teaches Caspian about the old Narnia under cover of stargazing sessions at night, framing the true history as something that has to be hidden from the Telmarine court. This detail shows how thoroughly the Telmarines have suppressed the old world.

  • The gift of the horn at parting

When Cornelius sends Caspian away, he gives him Susan's horn and tells him to use it only in the greatest need. The weight Cornelius places on this object signals to the reader that it will matter enormously.

What to carry forward.

  • Doctor Cornelius is the reason any of this works

Without him, Caspian grows up as another Telmarine who dismisses Old Narnia. Cornelius plants the beliefs and gives Caspian the horn. He is the quiet engine behind the whole plot.

  • Susan's horn connects both storylines

The horn Caspian uses to call for help is the same one Susan left behind. When it is blown, it pulls the Pevensies back into Narnia. Understanding this link is necessary for following the plot's logic.
