Section recap · 2 min read
What happens in Chapter 7.
Shug Avery, the blues singer Mr. ___ has always loved, arrives at the house sick and in need of care. Mr. ___ brings her in over Celie's objection, and Celie ends up being the one who nurses her back to health. Celie is fascinated by Shug from the moment she sees her. Shug is rude and dismissive at first, but Celie keeps caring for her anyway. This chapter sets up the central relationship of the novel. Shug is the first person who will eventually see Celie as a full human being, and the groundwork for that starts here.
The beats worth remembering.
Shug arrives sick and Mr. ___ brings her home
Mr. ___ doesn't ask Celie's permission. He simply installs his mistress in the house and expects Celie to nurse her. This shows how little say Celie has over her own home.
Celie sees Shug for the first time
Celie is struck by Shug's appearance and presence even though Shug is ill. She has seen a photo of Shug before and already admires her. Her feelings are clearly more than curiosity.
Shug insults Celie directly
Shug calls Celie ugly and shows no gratitude for being cared for. Celie doesn't react with anger. She just keeps working. Her lack of reaction says more about her self-image than any internal monologue could.
The moments you can actually use later.
Mr. ___ installs Shug without consulting Celie
The decision to bring Shug into the household is made entirely by Mr. ___. Celie has no voice in it. She is simply expected to provide care, which she does.
Shug calls Celie ugly on their first real meeting
Despite being nursed by Celie, Shug's first spoken words to her are dismissive and cruel. Celie records this without anger, which shows how low her sense of her own worth is at this point in the story.
What to carry forward.
Celie's attraction to Shug begins immediately
Students need to track this from the start. Celie's feelings for Shug are not a late development. They begin the moment Shug enters the house, and they shape every interaction between them.
Shug's cruelty doesn't cancel her importance
Shug is not kind to Celie at first. Students who expect her to be a rescuer from the beginning will miss how the relationship actually develops. It starts with Shug holding power and Celie absorbing it.
