What happens in Chapter 22.
Peeta's leg is badly infected and Katniss needs to get medicine from the Cornucopia feast the Gamemakers announce. Haymitch sends her a sleep syrup, and she uses it to knock Peeta out so he cannot stop her from going. She makes it to the feast, gets the medicine, but is attacked by Clove, who pins her down and taunts her about Rue. Thresh saves Katniss, killing Clove, because Katniss was kind to Rue. He lets Katniss go with a warning that they are even. Katniss returns and gives Peeta the medicine.
The beats worth remembering.
Katniss Drugs Peeta
Katniss mixes sleep syrup into Peeta's food so he will not wake up and try to stop her from going to the feast. It is a small betrayal done out of care, and Peeta is furious when he finds out later.
Clove Attacks at the Feast
Clove gets Katniss on the ground and is about to kill her, taunting her about Rue's death. The scene is tense because Katniss is genuinely helpless for one of the few times in the Games.
Thresh Spares Katniss
Thresh kills Clove and then lets Katniss go, saying they are square because of what she did for Rue. It is one of the clearest moments in the book where human decency cuts through the logic of the Games.
The moments you can actually use later.
Thresh's Decision to Spare Katniss
Thresh explicitly connects his mercy to Katniss's treatment of Rue. Students can use this scene to argue that acts of humanity inside the Games create ripple effects the Capitol did not intend.
Katniss Using the Sleep Syrup
Katniss deceives Peeta to protect him, which complicates the idea that their relationship is built on honesty. This is useful evidence for discussions about the cost of survival on personal relationships.
What to carry forward.
Kindness Has Consequences in the Arena
Katniss's alliance with Rue, and the respect she showed Rue after her death, directly saves her life here. Students should note this as evidence that the Games do not fully erase human connection.
Peeta and Katniss Have Different Ideas About the Rules
Peeta would have tried to stop Katniss from risking her life. Katniss overrides his choice by drugging him. This tension between protecting each other and respecting each other's agency runs through the rest of the book.
