The Return of the King: Homeward Bound
The recap, key beats, and evidence for Homeward Bound, without reopening the whole book.
Section recap · 2 min read
What happens in Homeward Bound.
The hobbits and Gandalf continue north toward the Shire, stopping at Rivendell to visit Bilbo one last time. Bilbo is very old now, barely holding on, and the visit is quiet and bittersweet. Gandalf tells the hobbits he will not be going all the way home with them. They are on their own for the final leg. This chapter is short but important: it closes the Bilbo chapter of the story and removes Gandalf as a safety net, forcing the hobbits to face whatever comes next without a wizard at their side.
The beats worth remembering.
Visiting Bilbo in Rivendell
The hobbits find Bilbo aged and sleepy, barely aware of what's going on around him. He gives Frodo his old mithril coat and the Red Book of Westmarch in spirit, though he's too tired to do much else. It's a goodbye without either of them saying so directly.
Gandalf Parts Ways with the Hobbits
At the edge of the Shire, Gandalf tells the hobbits he has other business and won't be coming in with them. He says they are capable of handling things themselves now. This is the last time the hobbits travel under his protection.
Gandalf's Hint About the Shire
Before leaving, Gandalf drops a vague warning that things may not be quite right at home. He doesn't spell it out, but the hobbits should be ready for trouble. This plants the seed for the Scouring chapter.
The moments you can actually use later.
Bilbo's Frailty at Rivendell
Bilbo can barely stay awake during the visit and seems only dimly aware of where he is. His condition shows how much time has passed and how the Ring's long influence has worn him down. Useful for tracking Bilbo's arc across all three books.
Gandalf Stepping Back
Gandalf explicitly tells the hobbits they don't need him anymore and that the Shire is their responsibility. This is a direct statement about the hobbits' growth, and it pays off everything their journey was supposed to teach them.
What to carry forward.
Bilbo's Story Is Ending
Bilbo is fading. He's lived an extraordinary life, but he's nearly done. His appearance here closes his arc as an active character. He'll appear once more, but only briefly, at the Grey Havens.
The Hobbits Must Act Alone
Gandalf's departure is deliberate. He believes the hobbits have grown enough to handle what's coming. Whether that's true gets tested immediately in the next chapter.

How this guide is built
This guide is built from the original text to help you get oriented fast. It is designed for recall, paper planning, and getting unstuck, but it is still a paraphrased guide, not a substitute for the reading itself. Double-check anything important before you turn in formal work.
