The Taming of the Shrew: Act 2
The recap, key beats, and evidence for Act 2, without reopening the whole book.
Section recap · 2 min read
What happens in Act 2.
Petruchio meets Katharina for the first time and the two go at each other in a battle of words. Katharina is sharp and combative; Petruchio refuses to be rattled and matches her at every turn. He tells Baptista they got along beautifully and announces they will marry on Sunday. Katharina has no real say. Meanwhile, the other suitors for Bianca present themselves to Baptista, and Lucentio and Hortensio compete in their tutor disguises. The act ends with two weddings arranged: Petruchio and Katharina, and eventually Lucentio and Bianca.
The beats worth remembering.
Petruchio and Katharina's First Meeting
The two trade insults and wordplay in a long sparring scene. Petruchio refuses to accept any of Katharina's hostility as real, insisting she is gentle and mild no matter what she says or does. It is a strange, aggressive courtship that leaves Katharina with no footing.
Petruchio Announces the Wedding
After meeting Katharina, Petruchio tells Baptista the wedding is set for Sunday. Katharina's objections are ignored entirely. Baptista goes along with it. This is the moment Katharina loses control of her own future.
The Bidding War for Bianca
Gremio and Tranio (pretending to be Lucentio) compete by listing their wealth and property to win Baptista's approval for Bianca's hand. Baptista picks the richer offer. Love has nothing to do with it.
The moments you can actually use later.
Petruchio's Reframing Tactic
During the meeting, every time Katharina acts aggressively, Petruchio describes her behavior as the opposite. He treats her anger as shyness and her insults as affection. This scene is the clearest example of his psychological strategy.
Baptista Accepts the Deal
Baptista agrees to the marriage after Petruchio claims Katharina consented in private. There is no verification. Baptista wants the problem solved. Students can point to this moment to show how Katharina's voice is structurally excluded.
What to carry forward.
Petruchio's Method Is Already Running
From the first scene with Katharina, Petruchio's tactic is clear: he will reframe everything she does and say the opposite of what is true. Students should notice this starts in Act 2, not Act 4. The taming begins at their first meeting.
Katharina Has No Legal Standing
Her father arranges her marriage without her consent. Her protests are not taken seriously by anyone onstage. This is worth noting for any essay about power or gender, because the play makes the power imbalance visible rather than hiding it.

Keep the question locked to Act 2 instead of the whole book.
