What happens in Act 4, Scene 2.

Back in Padua, Hortensio has given up on Bianca after watching her flirt openly with Lucentio (still in disguise). He tells Tranio (still pretending to be Lucentio) that he's abandoning his pursuit and plans to marry a wealthy widow instead. Tranio pretends to also give up on Bianca, and the two part ways. Then Tranio finds a traveling scholar and convinces him to play the role of Vincentio, Lucentio's father, to satisfy Baptista's demand for a financial guarantee before the marriage.

The beats worth remembering.

  • Hortensio quits the competition

After seeing Bianca and the disguised Lucentio together, Hortensio decides she's not worth pursuing. He swears off her and announces he'll marry someone who actually appreciates him.

  • Tranio fakes solidarity with Hortensio

Tranio pretends to also give up on Bianca, playing along to get rid of Hortensio as a rival. It's a small deception inside a much larger one.

  • The pedant is recruited as a fake father

Tranio spots a traveling scholar and, using a made-up story about danger in Padua, convinces him to impersonate Vincentio. This sets up the next stage of Lucentio's plan.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • Hortensio's decision to pursue the widow

Hortensio's pivot to a new match shows that his interest in Bianca was always more about status and money than genuine feeling, which mirrors the transactional nature of the whole courtship plot.

  • Tranio's recruitment of the pedant

Tranio engineers the fake father scheme on the spot, showing how far the servants and disguised characters have gone to control a situation that was never really theirs to control.

What to carry forward.

  • Hortensio's exit simplifies the plot

With Hortensio out of the running, Lucentio has a clear path to Bianca. But the deception now depends on a fake father, which will eventually collapse when the real Vincentio shows up.

  • The subplot keeps stacking deceptions

Every solution in the Bianca plot requires another lie. Tracking the layers helps students understand why the final act gets so chaotic.
