The ideas most worth talking about.

Authority and its limits

Ezeulu has real power, but it depends on the community's consent. The novel tracks how that consent erodes when he stops serving the community's needs and starts serving his own sense of principle.

Colonial interference

The British do not need to conquer Umuaro outright. Detaining Ezeulu for two months is enough to set a chain of events in motion that the community cannot stop. Achebe shows colonialism working through disruption, not just domination.

Pride and self-destruction

Ezeulu cannot separate his loyalty to Ulu from his personal pride. When he refuses to adjust the harvest calendar, he tells himself he is obeying the god. The novel suggests he is also punishing his enemies, and the two motives become impossible to untangle.

Religion under pressure

Igbo religious authority collapses not because Christianity is more convincing, but because Ezeulu makes it impossible to follow. The missionaries win by being flexible when Ezeulu is rigid.

The individual caught in history

Ezeulu did not choose to live under colonial rule. He did not choose to be detained. But the choices he makes inside those constraints seal his fate. Achebe shows how historical forces and personal decisions combine to produce tragedy.
