As I Lay Dying: Cash
The recap, key beats, and evidence for Cash, without reopening the whole book.

What happens in Cash.
Cash gives the novel's final narration. He reflects on Darl being sent away, on the journey, and on Anse's remarriage. Anse has returned with a new wife and a gramophone. Cash is measured about all of it. He does not condemn Darl's commitment outright but admits it was hard to watch. The novel ends here, with Cash's practical voice closing out a story full of chaos and loss.
The beats worth remembering.
Anse returns with a new wife
Anse reappears with a woman he introduces as the new Mrs. Bundren. He has moved on from Addie's death with remarkable speed, and the family has to absorb this.
The gramophone
Anse has also bought a gramophone, apparently with money he took from Cash and possibly Dewey Dell. It is a strange, almost comic detail at the end of a grim story.
Cash reflects on Darl
Cash says he thinks Darl may have been right about some things but that what he did could not be allowed. It is the closest the novel gets to a moral reckoning about Darl's fate.
The moments you can actually use later.
Anse's new wife and gramophone
Anse's immediate remarriage and purchase of a luxury item with the family's money shows that the entire journey was about his needs, not Addie's wishes or the family's wellbeing.
Cash's admission about Darl
Cash says Darl may have seen things correctly but that the family had no choice. This is the novel's only near-apology for what was done to Darl, and it comes from the quietest voice in the book.
What to carry forward.
Anse survives everything unchanged
Anse got his teeth, got to Jefferson, and got a new wife. He is the one character who ends better off than he started. Students writing about selfishness in the novel should end here.
Cash is the novel's moral anchor
He is not the most perceptive narrator, but he is the most honest. His final reflection on Darl is the only moment where the family acknowledges what they did and what it cost.
