Themes

The ideas most worth talking about.

Growing up through mistakes

David does not learn from a single lesson. He idealizes Steerforth, marries the wrong person, and misses Agnes for years. The novel argues that maturity comes from accumulating errors and eventually seeing them clearly.

Class, shame, and ambition

David's warehouse experience marks him for life. He climbs into the middle class through education and writing, but the shame of his factory months follows him. Dickens uses David's trajectory to show how class anxiety shapes identity.

Appearance versus reality

The novel's most dangerous characters are charming. Steerforth is magnetic. Heep performs humility. Dora is lovely. David keeps trusting surfaces, and the novel keeps punishing him for it until he learns to look deeper.

Memory and self-construction

David narrates his own life as an adult looking back. The way he frames events, what he emphasizes, and what he glosses over all shape the story. The novel asks how much any of us can really know about our own past.

Loyalty and its rewards

The characters who stay loyal, Agnes, Peggotty, Traddles, are the ones the novel ultimately rewards. Dickens is not subtle about this, but he makes the case through plot rather than preaching.
