Characters

Who matters and what they help you prove.

Ugwu

A village boy who becomes Odenigbo's houseboy at thirteen. He is the novel's moral compass and its most complete arc. He starts curious and eager, becomes a soldier, commits a serious crime, and ends as the writer who records what happened. His journey from houseboy to author is the novel's quiet argument about voice and history.

Olanna

Odenigbo's partner and the emotional center of the novel. She is educated, generous, and willing to sacrifice her wealthy family's approval for the life she wants. The war strips away her stability and forces her to survive on instinct. Her relationship with her twin sister Kainene is as important as her relationship with Odenigbo.

Odenigbo

A mathematics professor and passionate Igbo nationalist. He is charismatic and idealistic in the early sections, but the war breaks him. His infidelity and his eventual psychological collapse show how the people who talk most loudly about resistance can fall apart when resistance becomes real.

Kainene

Olanna's twin sister and the sharpest character in the novel. She is guarded, sardonic, and more practically capable than anyone around her. She runs a refugee camp with real competence. Her disappearance near the end of the war is the novel's most painful unresolved moment.

Richard Churchill

A British expat who stays in Biafra out of love for Kainene and commitment to the cause. He wants to be the one who tells the world what happened. The novel gradually shows that his position as an outsider limits what he can actually say, and the manuscript twist confirms it.
