Act 1
Macbeth returns from war as a celebrated general, then runs into three witches who tell him he will become king. That prophecy plants a seed.
Act 2
Duncan is murdered in his sleep at Macbeth's castle. Macbeth does the killing, but he comes back shaken and carrying the daggers he was supposed to leave at the scene.
Act 3
Macbeth is king, but he is not comfortable. He fears Banquo because the witches said Banquo's descendants would be kings, which means Macbeth's line ends with him.
Act 4
Macbeth visits the witches and gets three new prophecies: beware Macduff, no man born of woman can harm him, and he is safe until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane.
Act 5
Everything collapses at once. Lady Macbeth has been sleepwalking and reliving the murders in fragmented, guilty speech.
