Characters

Who matters and what they help you prove.

Obi Okonkwo

The protagonist. He returns from England idealistic and ends up convicted of bribery. His arc is a slow erosion, not a sudden fall. He is smart, principled at the start, and genuinely loves Clara, but he cannot hold all his obligations together at once.

Clara Okeke

Obi's girlfriend and the novel's most tragic figure. She is educated, capable, and clear-eyed about the osu problem from the beginning. She warns Obi it will not work. She is right. The abortion and breakup leave her absent from the second half of the novel, but her absence drives Obi's decline.

Isaac Okonkwo

Obi's father, a Christian convert and teacher. He broke with Igbo tradition in his own generation, which makes his resistance to Clara complicated. He is more open to Obi's arguments than his wife is, but not open enough to act against the community.

Hannah Okonkwo

Obi's mother. Her refusal to accept Clara is absolute and framed in both Christian and traditional terms. Her death after the Clara conflict removes the last emotional anchor Obi had. She is not a villain, but her immovability has consequences.

Mr. Green

Obi's British boss at the Civil Service. He is paternalistic and dismissive of Nigerians, convinced they cannot govern themselves. He represents the colonial attitude that education is wasted on Africans. His presence frames Obi's failure within a larger colonial context.

The Umuofia Progressive Union

Not one person but a collective character. They funded Obi's education and expect repayment in money and status. They pressure him on Clara and on his lifestyle. They embody the community's claim on Obi and the way collective obligation can become a trap.
