Fate versus free will
Every character who tries to escape the oracle's prediction ends up fulfilling it. The play does not show fate as a force that overrides choice. It shows fate working through choices, which is more disturbing.

Come here when you know what happens in Oedipus Rex and need to say what it means. This is where the book stops being plot and starts becoming an argument.

Sophocles builds a consistent pattern: those who can physically see are blind to the truth, and the one man who is blind, Tiresias, sees everything. Oedipus's self-blinding at the end completes the reversal.
Oedipus's confidence in his own intelligence leads him to dismiss warnings, accuse allies of conspiracy, and push the investigation past the point of no return. His pride is not a flaw added on top of his character. It is his character.
The play treats the pursuit of truth as genuinely dangerous. Finding out what happened does not bring relief. It brings destruction. Sophocles does not resolve this tension. He leaves it open.
The entire plot turns on the question of who Oedipus really is. His identity as king, as husband, as son, all collapse at once when the truth comes out. The play asks what happens to a person when every role they hold turns out to be a lie.
