Characters

Who matters and what they help you prove.

Melinda Sordino

The narrator and main character. She was raped by Andy Evans at a summer party and has been silent about it ever since. Her arc moves from total shutdown to the moment she can finally speak the truth. Everything in the book is filtered through her sharp, self-aware, and often darkly funny perspective.

Andy Evans

The student who raped Melinda. He's a senior, popular, and socially protected. He moves through the school with confidence while Melinda falls apart. When he attacks her a second time, she fights back, and his reputation finally collapses.

Rachel

Melinda's former best friend. She cuts Melinda off after the party and doesn't understand why. When Andy starts dating her, Melinda tries to warn her. Rachel dismisses the warning until Andy assaults her at prom, which is when she finally believes Melinda.

Mr. Freeman

Melinda's art teacher. He's unconventional and genuinely interested in his students as people. He assigns the tree project and pushes Melinda to put real emotion into her work. He's the first adult who treats her like she matters, and he's the one she finally tells at the end.

Melinda's parents

They're present but not really there. They see Melinda struggling and respond with frustration rather than curiosity. They're not cruel, but their failure to ask the right questions leaves Melinda completely without support at home.

Ivy

A former friend who reconnects with Melinda through art class. She doesn't know what happened to Melinda, but she treats her with basic kindness. She's one of the few people at school who doesn't make Melinda feel like a target.

How this guide is built

This guide is built from the original text to help you get oriented fast. It is designed for recall, paper planning, and getting unstuck, but it is still a paraphrased guide, not a substitute for the reading itself. Double-check anything important before you turn in formal work.
