The recap, key beats, and evidence for In the Dark, without reopening the whole book.
Section recap · 2 min read
What happens in In the Dark.
Dmitri is outside his father's house, watching and waiting. He is convinced Grushenka may be inside with Fyodor. His jealousy and rage are at their peak. He creeps through the garden and peers through the window. The old servant Grigory spots him and tries to stop him. Dmitri strikes Grigory with a brass pestle and flees, believing he may have killed him. This is the night of the murder, and Dmitri's movements here will define the case against him.
The beats worth remembering.
Dmitri Watches the House
Dmitri stations himself outside Fyodor's home, tormented by the idea that Grushenka is inside. His surveillance is the act of a man who has lost rational control.
The Signal at the Window
Dmitri uses a secret knock that Smerdyakov had told him about, a signal Fyodor was supposed to use with Grushenka. This detail will later be used against Dmitri in court.
Dmitri Strikes Grigory
When the old servant grabs him, Dmitri hits him hard and runs. He does not know whether Grigory is dead or alive. The blow, and his flight, make him look guilty of everything that follows.
The moments you can actually use later.
The Brass Pestle
Dmitri carries a weapon into the garden and uses it on Grigory. The pestle becomes physical evidence that ties him to violence on the night of the murder, even if it was not used on Fyodor.
The Secret Knock
Dmitri's use of the signal Smerdyakov described shows he had inside knowledge of Fyodor's arrangements with Grushenka. Prosecutors will use this to argue premeditation.
What to carry forward.
Dmitri's Actions That Night Are Damning
Even though Dmitri did not kill his father, almost everything he did that night looks like the behavior of someone who did. Students need to hold this chapter in mind when reading the trial.
Smerdyakov's Role Is Already Present
The secret signal Smerdyakov shared with Dmitri is a small but telling detail. It shows Smerdyakov was feeding information to multiple people and had access and knowledge that matter later.
