Death drives every major decision Gilgamesh makes after Enkidu dies. The epic does not offer a cure. It forces Gilgamesh, and the reader, to sit with the fact that death cannot be beaten.
Enkidu does not just accompany Gilgamesh. He changes him. Before Enkidu, Gilgamesh is a bully. After their friendship, he is capable of love, grief, and genuine purpose.
Gilgamesh is the strongest man alive, two-thirds divine, and he still cannot stay awake for seven days or hold onto a plant long enough to get home. Power has a ceiling, and the gods set it.
Enkidu begins as a wild man and becomes civilized through human contact. Gilgamesh ends the epic having moved in the opposite direction, wandering in animal skins. The poem treats both states as real and neither as permanent.
Gilgamesh wants to live forever, but the poem keeps returning to what he built. The Cedar Forest expedition is about winning a name. The ending points to the walls of Uruk. Legacy is what humans get instead of eternal life.
