What happens in Chapter 9.
Amir's birthday party is lavish and Baba spends generously. Amir receives many gifts, including a special notebook from Rahim Khan. Unable to live with Hassan's presence, Amir plants his birthday money and his new watch under Hassan's mattress to frame him for theft. Ali and Hassan are called in. Hassan confesses to stealing even though he did not do it. Baba forgives him, but Ali says they are leaving anyway. Baba begs them to stay. They go. This is the last time Amir sees Hassan for decades.

Amir hides his birthday money and watch under Hassan's mattress. He hopes Hassan will be sent away, removing the daily reminder of what Amir did in the alley.
Hassan's False Confession
When confronted, Hassan admits to stealing. He did not steal anything. His confession protects Amir one final time, which makes it the most painful example of Hassan's loyalty in the book.
Ali and Hassan Leave
Despite Baba's pleading, Ali announces they are leaving Baba's household. Baba cries, one of the very few times he shows that kind of emotion. Ali and Hassan walk out, and Amir watches them go.
