Alienation
Gregor was isolated before the transformation. His job kept him away from home, he had no close relationships, and his family treated him as an income source. The insect body makes that isolation total and physical.
Use this page when the plot already makes sense and you need the theme, pressure, or lens that turns into a claim.
Come here when you know what happens in The Metamorphosis and need to say what it means. This is where the book stops being plot and starts becoming an argument.

Gregor was isolated before the transformation. His job kept him away from home, he had no close relationships, and his family treated him as an income source. The insect body makes that isolation total and physical.
The Samsas feel responsible for Gregor at first, but that responsibility erodes as the cost grows. Kafka shows how family bonds depend on reciprocity. When Gregor can no longer contribute, the bonds break.
Gregor's entire sense of self was built around his job, even though he hated it. After the transformation, he has no role, no purpose, and no place in the household economy. The story asks what a person is when their function disappears.
Gregor's mind stays human but his body prevents communication. He can hear and understand everything, but no one can understand him. His physical form traps his consciousness and makes connection impossible.
As Gregor loses power, the rest of the family gains it. The father becomes authoritative again. Grete becomes the household decision-maker. The family's rise runs exactly parallel to Gregor's decline, and his death completes their recovery.
