Chapter 1
Ponyboy Curtis, a 14-year-old greaser, gets jumped by a group of Socs on his way home from the movies. His gang shows up and chases them off.
Chapter 2
Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally sneak into a drive-in movie without paying. They meet Cherry Valance and Marcia, two Soc girls sitting nearby.

Cherry and Ponyboy keep talking at the drive-in, and the conversation gets honest. Cherry admits that Socs have their own problems, that the pressure to be cool and in control is…
Chapter 4
At the park, a carload of Socs including Bob, Cherry's boyfriend, confronts Ponyboy and Johnny. They try to drown Ponyboy in the fountain.
Chapter 5
Ponyboy and Johnny hide in the abandoned church on Jay Mountain for several days. They cut and bleach their hair to change their appearance.
Chapter 6
Dally shows up at the church and tells Pony and Johnny that Cherry has been acting as a spy for the greasers, and that the rumble is set.
Chapter 7
Pony wakes up in the hospital to learn that Johnny is in critical condition with a broken back and severe burns, and that Dally also has injuries.
Chapter 8
Pony and Two-Bit visit Johnny and Dally in the hospital. Johnny is fading and asks for a copy of Gone with the Wind.
Chapter 9
The night of the rumble arrives. Pony is sick but goes anyway.
Chapter 10
Dally calls the Curtis house and tells them he robbed a store and the police are after him. The gang runs to find him.
