The Two Towers: Shelob's Lair
The recap, key beats, and evidence for Shelob's Lair, without reopening the whole book.

What happens in Shelob's Lair.
Gollum leads Frodo and Sam into the tunnel of Shelob, an ancient giant spider who predates Sauron's dominion in the area. The tunnel is pitch black and filled with a suffocating stench. Sam uses the Phial of Galadriel to drive back Shelob temporarily, but the group gets separated. Gollum attacks Sam from behind, and Frodo runs ahead alone into the dark. Shelob catches Frodo and stings him, paralyzing him. The chapter ends with Frodo apparently dead and Sam left to face the situation alone.
The beats worth remembering.
The Phial Drives Back Shelob
When Shelob first attacks, Sam uses the Phial of Galadriel and the light stops the spider. It is the first time the gift from Lothlórien is used in a direct confrontation, and it works.
Gollum Attacks Sam
Gollum jumps Sam from behind while Frodo runs ahead. The attack confirms that Gollum has fully committed to his plan. The Sméagol side is gone.
Shelob Stings Frodo
Frodo, alone in the dark, is caught by Shelob and stung. He collapses. Sam arrives too late. The chapter ends on what looks like the death of the main character, which is one of the most shocking moments in the book.
The moments you can actually use later.
The Phial of Galadriel in Combat
Sam holds up the Phial and calls on Elbereth, and the light actually pushes Shelob back. It is proof that the gifts of the Elves carry real power, not just symbolic comfort.
Frodo's Collapse
Shelob's sting paralyzes Frodo completely. Sam finds him on the ground and cannot wake him. The scene forces Sam to decide whether to take the Ring and continue the quest alone, which he does.
What to carry forward.
Gollum's Betrayal Is Complete
Everything Faramir warned about comes true here. Gollum used the hobbits to get past Faramir's men and then delivered them to Shelob. Students should connect this back to the warnings in chapters 17 and 18.
Sam's Role Shifts
With Frodo down, Sam becomes the active agent. The rest of Book IV depends on what Sam chooses to do next. This chapter is the hinge that turns Sam from a sidekick into a protagonist.

How this guide is built
This guide is built from the original text to help you get oriented fast. It is designed for recall, paper planning, and getting unstuck, but it is still a paraphrased guide, not a substitute for the reading itself. Double-check anything important before you turn in formal work.
