What happens in The Choices of Master Samwise.

Sam finds Frodo apparently dead after Shelob's attack and has to decide what to do next. He takes the Ring, believing he must carry the quest forward alone. Then he hears orcs coming and hides, only to learn from their conversation that Frodo is not dead but paralyzed by venom. The orcs carry Frodo into the tower of Cirith Ungol before Sam can act, and the gate slams shut. Sam is left outside, alone, with the Ring, and the book ends there. What changes is everything: Frodo is captured, Sam has the Ring, and the Fellowship's quest is now in the worst possible position.

The beats worth remembering.

  • Sam Takes the Ring

Believing Frodo is dead, Sam makes the agonizing choice to take the Ring and continue the quest himself. This is the first time Sam holds the Ring, and it immediately tests him with visions of power he quickly rejects.

  • Overhearing the Orcs

Sam hides as two orc scouts discover Frodo's body. Their argument reveals that Shelob's venom does not kill but paralyzes, meaning Frodo is alive. Sam learns this too late to stop them from taking Frodo.

  • The Gate Closes on Sam

The orcs carry Frodo inside the tower of Cirith Ungol and the heavy gate shuts before Sam can get through. He is left outside, alone, holding the Ring, with no clear way to rescue Frodo. The book ends on this image.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • Sam's Vision of Himself as a Great Hero

When Sam holds the Ring, he briefly imagines transforming the world into a vast garden with himself as its lord, then immediately recognizes how ridiculous that is for a hobbit from the Shire. The scene shows the Ring tailoring its temptation to each bearer.

  • The Orc Scouts' Argument Over Frodo

The two orcs bicker over Frodo's body and what to do with him, and their disagreement accidentally gives Sam the crucial information that Frodo is alive. It also shows that orc factions distrust each other, a detail that becomes important in the next book.

What to carry forward.

  • Sam's Loyalty Is Tested at Its Limit

Sam has every reason to flee or give up, but he chooses to keep going even when he thinks Frodo is dead. That choice defines his character for the rest of the story and is worth citing in any essay about courage or friendship in the novel.

  • The Ring Passes to Sam Temporarily

Sam carrying the Ring matters because it shows the Ring's temptation works differently on him than on Frodo or Boromir. He imagines using it but finds the fantasy absurd rather than seductive. This contrast is useful for discussing how character shapes resistance to corruption.
