Eustace cannot shed his dragon skin no matter how hard he tries. Aslan has to do it for him. Lewis repeats this idea across the book: real change goes deeper than self-effort can reach.
The golden pool scene shows Caspian and Edmund, two characters who are generally good, turning hostile within minutes of finding unlimited wealth. Lewis does not treat greed as a flaw only bad people have.
The eastward voyage is not just geographic. As the ship moves further from the known world, the water sweetens, the light brightens, and the rules change. Lewis builds a physical sense that there is something beyond ordinary life worth moving toward.
Each character faces a temptation shaped for them specifically. Eustace faces greed and isolation. Lucy faces vanity and jealousy. Caspian faces the desire for power. Lewis shows that temptation does not look the same for everyone.
Edmund and Lucy's farewell to Narnia is not dressed up as a happy ending. They lose something they love. Lewis acknowledges the loss before offering the redirection. The grief is part of the point.
