What happens in Act 3, Scene 3 – A Street.
Antonio has followed Sebastian to Illyria despite the danger it poses to him personally. He gives Sebastian his money purse for safekeeping and arranges to meet him later at an inn. This short scene exists mainly to set up the confusion that will come when Viola is mistaken for Sebastian and Antonio is arrested.
The beats worth remembering.
Antonio reveals his past in Illyria
Antonio explains that he has enemies in Illyria because of past naval battles against the city. Coming here is a genuine risk for him, which makes his loyalty to Sebastian more striking.
Antonio hands over his money
He gives Sebastian his purse so Sebastian can shop freely. This detail matters later when Antonio asks Viola for the money back and she has no idea what he is talking about.
They agree on a meeting place
The two plan to reunite at the Elephant inn. The arrangement sets up the scene where Antonio is arrested and cannot find Sebastian.
The moments you can actually use later.
Antonio's history with Illyria
Antonio tells Sebastian he cannot safely walk the streets of Illyria because of his military past there, establishing that his presence in the city is a real sacrifice.
The handoff of the purse
Antonio entrusts Sebastian with all his money before they separate, a gesture that becomes the source of a major misunderstanding once the twins are confused for each other.
What to carry forward.
Antonio's loyalty is real and costly
Unlike most characters in this play who are performing or pretending, Antonio's devotion to Sebastian is genuine and puts him in actual danger. This makes his later confusion and sense of betrayal hit harder.
The purse is a plot device, not a throwaway detail
Students should remember that Antonio gives Sebastian money here. When Antonio later demands it back from Viola, her confusion is what tips him off that something is wrong with his understanding of events.
