What happens in Act 3.
This is the act where everything breaks. Serebryakov calls a family meeting to announce he wants to sell the estate, which would leave Vanya and Sonya with nothing. Vanya explodes. He goes to get a gun and fires at Serebryakov, missing twice. Meanwhile, Yelena asks Astrov about his feelings for Sonya, but the conversation turns and he declares his attraction to Yelena instead. Vanya's shooting attempt is the dramatic center of the play, but the Astrov-Yelena scene matters just as much for understanding why nothing gets resolved.
