What happens in Ender's Teacher.

Ender arrives at Command School on Eros and meets Mazer Rackham, the hero who defeated the Formics in the Second Invasion. Mazer becomes Ender's personal teacher and immediately begins brutalizing him in simulations, beating him repeatedly to teach him that his old tactics don't work at this scale. Ender learns that commanding a fleet is nothing like commanding a platoon. He also learns to use ansible communication and works with his old Salamander and Dragon Army friends, who are now his squadron commanders. The simulations grow increasingly complex and Ender grows increasingly worn down.

The beats worth remembering.

  • Ender meets Mazer Rackham

Mazer reveals himself as the legendary commander who saved humanity. He immediately tells Ender that everything Ender thinks he knows is wrong, and then proves it by defeating him in simulation after simulation.

  • Ender's old friends become his squadron leaders

Petra, Bean, Alai, and the others from Battle School are brought to Command School and placed under Ender's command via ansible. Their presence gives Ender support, but also raises the stakes because he is now responsible for people he cares about.

  • The simulation schedule breaks Ender down

Mazer runs Ender through exhausting, demoralizing drills. Ender starts making mistakes. He loses confidence. The reader sees him deteriorating in a way that feels different from the Battle School pressure because there is no end in sight.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • Mazer's deliberate losses imposed on Ender

Mazer engineers Ender's defeats in simulation to expose the limits of his tactical instincts. This is the first time in the novel that Ender faces a teacher who is openly adversarial and honest about it at the same time.

  • Ender's deteriorating performance under sustained pressure

As the simulation schedule intensifies, Ender begins to lose his edge. His errors in this section set up the reader to understand why the final battle looks the way it does, and why Ender believes it is just another test.

What to carry forward.

  • Mazer's cruelty is pedagogical

Mazer beats Ender in simulations on purpose to force him to think differently. Students should compare this to Graff's methods. Both men are cruel to Ender, but Mazer is honest about why, which makes the relationship different.

  • Scale changes everything

Ender's genius at small-unit tactics doesn't automatically transfer to fleet command. This chapter shows that the skills that made him exceptional at Battle School are not sufficient, and he has to rebuild his thinking from scratch.
