A wizard who was once the head of Gandalf's order. Saruman has secretly allied with Sauron and tries to capture the Fellowship at Caradhras. His betrayal removes a potential ally and closes off one escape route.
The Elf lady of Lothlórien. Galadriel is ancient and powerful, and she refuses the Ring when Frodo offers it to her. Her refusal shows that wisdom means knowing what you cannot safely hold.
