Themes

The ideas most worth talking about.

The corruption of power

The Ring tempts every character who encounters it, from Boromir to Galadriel. Tolkien shows that the desire to do good with power is exactly what makes power dangerous.

Friendship and loyalty

Sam refuses to let Frodo go to Mordor alone even when Frodo tries to protect him by leaving. The bond between Sam and Frodo holds when everything else breaks apart.

The cost of the ordinary world

The Shire represents safety, comfort, and innocence. Frodo's departure shows that protecting that world requires someone to leave it behind, possibly forever.

The burden of responsibility

Frodo does not want the Ring or the quest. He carries both anyway. The book tracks how that weight changes him physically and emotionally as the story progresses.

The failure of unity

The Council of Elrond brings together all the free peoples, but they cannot agree. The Fellowship itself breaks apart before reaching its goal. Tolkien shows that cooperation is fragile under pressure.
