What happens in Chapter 32.

Pip receives a note from Estella saying she is coming to London and asking him to meet her at Newgate Prison, where she'll be passing through. While waiting, Pip runs into Wemmick, who gives him a tour of the prison. Pip is disturbed by the experience and feels contaminated by the place. When Estella arrives, she seems untouched by the grim surroundings, which unsettles Pip further. He wonders whether there is some connection between Estella and the criminal world he has just witnessed.

The beats worth remembering.

  • Pip Waits at Newgate

Pip arrives early and ends up touring Newgate Prison with Wemmick. The prison's atmosphere of crime and punishment leaves Pip feeling dirty and uncomfortable.

  • Wemmick's Casual Familiarity with the Prison

Wemmick moves through Newgate with ease, knowing prisoners by name and treating the place as routine. This contrast with Pip's discomfort shows how differently people relate to the criminal world.

  • Estella Arrives, Untouched

When Estella steps out of her coach, she seems completely unaffected by the grim setting. Pip is struck by how strange it is that she, of all people, should arrive at this place, and he feels a vague, troubling sense of connection he can't name yet.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • Pip Feels Tainted by the Prison

After the tour, Pip feels as though the prison's corruption has rubbed off on him, and he worries about meeting Estella in this state. His discomfort shows how much he cares about appearing respectable.

  • Pip's Unnamed Unease About Estella

As Estella arrives, Pip has a vague feeling that she and the prison are connected in some way he cannot explain. This moment is easy to overlook on a first read but becomes significant once Magwitch's story is fully known.

What to carry forward.

  • Newgate Foreshadows Later Revelations

The prison visit plants a seed. Pip's uneasy feeling that Estella and the criminal world are somehow linked will pay off when the truth about her origins is revealed later.

  • Wemmick's Double Life

Wemmick is completely at home in Newgate, which is a preview of his theme in the novel: he keeps his professional world and his personal world completely separate. This chapter shows the professional side in full.
