What happens in Chapter 54.

The escape attempt takes place. Pip, Herbert, and Startop row Magwitch down the Thames toward a steamer that will carry him out of England. The journey is tense and beautifully described, with the river feeling both real and ominous. Just as they approach the steamer, a police boat intercepts them. Compeyson is on board, having informed on Magwitch. In the struggle, Magwitch and Compeyson go into the water together. Compeyson drowns. Magwitch is pulled out, badly injured, and arrested. Pip stays with him. The chapter is the emotional and narrative peak of the Magwitch plot.

The beats worth remembering.

  • The River Journey

The long row down the Thames is described in careful detail. The mood is tense and the river itself feels like it's watching. Students often remember this as one of the most cinematic scenes in the novel.

  • The Interception

A police galley cuts them off just as the steamer comes into view. Compeyson has betrayed Magwitch again, completing the pattern of their relationship.

  • Magwitch and Compeyson in the Water

The two men who have defined each other's lives end up in the Thames together. Compeyson dies. Magwitch survives but is broken. The symmetry is deliberate.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • Pip Stays at Magwitch's Side After the Arrest

When Magwitch is pulled from the water and taken into custody, Pip does not flee. He remains with him openly, knowing it may cost him legally and socially.

  • Compeyson's Role in the Interception

The police know exactly where to find Magwitch because Compeyson told them. This confirms that Compeyson has been a threat throughout and that Magwitch never had a real chance once Compeyson knew he was back.

What to carry forward.

  • Compeyson Is Magwitch's Destruction

From the original trial to this moment, Compeyson has been the force that ruins Magwitch. His death here closes that loop, but too late to save Magwitch.

  • Pip Chooses Magwitch Over Everything

Pip could walk away now. His money is gone, Magwitch is caught, the plan has failed. Instead Pip stays. That choice is the clearest sign of who Pip has become.
