What happens in Chapter 43.
Pip goes to see Estella and Miss Havisham at Satis House, but first he runs into Bentley Drummle at an inn. The two men have a tense, hostile exchange — they despise each other and both know it. When Pip reaches Satis House, he learns that Estella is going to marry Drummle. This is a gut punch. Pip came hoping to sort out his feelings; instead he finds out the woman he loves is engaged to the man he hates most.
The beats worth remembering.
Pip and Drummle at the inn
The two rivals meet by accident and spend the encounter in barely concealed hostility. Drummle is arrogant and Pip is contemptuous, but Drummle is the one with power here because he has Estella.
Pip arrives at Satis House
Pip makes the trip partly to see Estella and partly still clinging to the old fantasy that Miss Havisham has plans for them. That fantasy is about to be destroyed.
News of Estella's engagement to Drummle
Pip learns Estella will marry Drummle. Everything he built his hopes on — the idea that Estella was being kept for him — turns out to have been his own invention.
The moments you can actually use later.
The inn confrontation
Pip and Drummle's meeting at the inn shows two men who represent opposite ideas of what a gentleman is, and Drummle wins the social round simply by being richer and less bothered.
Estella's engagement announcement
When Pip hears that Estella will marry Drummle, it confirms that Miss Havisham's plans for Estella had nothing to do with Pip's happiness and everything to do with revenge on men.
What to carry forward.
Pip's romantic hopes are finished
The engagement announcement closes off the last version of Pip's original dream. Students should note that this happens at the same time his financial expectations are also collapsing.
Drummle as a foil
Drummle is everything Pip fears becoming: wealthy, cruel, and indifferent to others. The fact that Estella chooses him over Pip says something about how Miss Havisham trained her.
