What happens in Chapter 18.
Katniss and Rue finalize their alliance and make a plan. They want to destroy the Career tributes' food supply, which is stockpiled near the Cornucopia. Without that supply, the Careers lose their main advantage. Rue will light decoy fires to draw the Careers away while Katniss locates and destroys the food cache. The plan works at first. Katniss finds the pile and notices it is surrounded by landmines harvested from the launch pads. She figures out how to detonate them by shooting a bag of apples that spills onto the mines. The explosion destroys the food. She is thrown by the blast and temporarily deafened in one ear. Meanwhile, she hears Rue's signal but then hears her scream.
The beats worth remembering.
The Plan to Destroy the Food Supply
Katniss and Rue map out a coordinated strategy. Rue handles the distraction while Katniss handles the sabotage. It is the first time Katniss operates as part of a team with a real tactical plan.
Shooting the Apple Bag
Katniss spots that the food pile is protected by landmines and works out that she can trigger them by shooting a bag of apples onto the pressure plates. The shot is difficult and she only succeeds on the third arrow.
Rue's Scream
Just as Katniss recovers from the explosion and moves toward their meeting point, she hears Rue cry out. The chapter ends there, cutting off before the reader knows what happened.
The moments you can actually use later.
The Apple Bag Shot
Katniss's decision to use the mines against the Careers by triggering them indirectly shows her ability to read a situation and improvise under pressure, not just fight directly.
Rue's Scream as a Cliffhanger
The chapter closes on Rue's cry of distress, which forces the reader forward and signals that the alliance is about to be tested in the worst possible way.
What to carry forward.
Destroying the Supply Changes the Game
The Career tributes' food advantage is gone. This levels the playing field and forces everyone, including the Careers, into the same desperate survival situation Katniss has been in all along.
Teamwork Has Limits in the Arena
The alliance with Rue produces real results, but the moment they split up, something goes wrong. Students should note how the Games punish cooperation by forcing separation.
