Section recap · 2 min read

What happens in Chapter 20.

Katniss is alone again and grieving. She eats the bread from District 11 and tries to refocus on survival. The Gamemakers announce a rule change: two tributes from the same district can now win together. Katniss immediately thinks of Peeta. She calls out his name. This announcement is a turning point because it gives her a reason to find him and work with him openly. She tracks Peeta down and discovers he is badly wounded and hiding in the mud by a stream, camouflaged so well she nearly walks past him. His leg is infected with a deep sword wound from Cato. She cleans him up and moves him to a cave to hide. The chapter ends with Katniss beginning to care for him, and the audience responding with gifts.

The beats worth remembering.

  • The Rule Change Announcement

The Gamemakers change the rules mid-Games to allow two winners from the same district. It is an unusual move, and Katniss knows it is designed to create drama, but she uses it anyway.

  • Finding Peeta Camouflaged

Katniss almost misses Peeta entirely because he has used his painting skills to blend into the riverbank. When she finds him, he is feverish and barely conscious.

  • Moving Peeta to the Cave

Katniss gets Peeta to a hidden cave and begins treating his wound. The audience sends medicine, signaling that the Capitol's viewers want to see this partnership succeed.

The moments you can actually use later.

  • Katniss Calling Out for Peeta

The moment Katniss hears the announcement and calls Peeta's name is the first time she acts on her feelings for him in a direct, unguarded way, even if her motives are mixed.

  • Audience Gifts After She Reaches Peeta

Sponsors send supplies to Katniss once she is caring for Peeta, showing how the Capitol's audience rewards the narrative they want to see and how Katniss can use that to her advantage.

What to carry forward.

  • The Rule Change Is Manipulation, and Katniss Uses It Anyway

The Capitol is engineering a love story for ratings. Katniss knows this but decides to play along because it gives her a real chance to survive with Peeta. Her awareness of the manipulation matters for later chapters.

  • Peeta's Camouflage Skill Pays Off

His ability to disguise himself kept him alive long enough for Katniss to find him. It is a callback to his training score and shows that non-combat skills matter in the arena.
